"Goin' Wes" Review

Ken Song shows himself an able Hard Bop guitarist that has been influenced by the great Wes Montgomery through more than a mere copping of licks. There is an organic wholeness to the playing on Goin' Wes, and each supporting player provides competent, sympathetic support.
Song has a bluesy sensibility and smooth facility in Charlie Parker's "Segment." Miles' soulful "Vierd Blues" witnesses Song's ability to continue weaving tasteful Blues lines in the manner of Wes and his era--pure and clean Bop phrasing, with some of Wes' patent octaves at the head. Song's unaccompanied chordal introduction to "Everything Happens To Me" changes the mood and in his choruses there are the octave work and tone of Wes' Mastersounds period. Nice lines spin out a lyric tale on this one. "Honeysuckle Rose" gives us another side of Song's playing, more elemental, with a Charlie Christian influence that of course Wes acknowledged as well.
There is a Goodman small-group aura to this entire performance. It is nicely done. All in all, this is a very pleasant listen. One wonders what will be Mr. Song's next move.
