"Goin' Wes" CD Review
by JIM SANTELLA
LA Jazz Scene - June 2006
Wes Montgomery's "West Coast Blues" has long been a favorite of straight-ahead jazz fans. With his debut recording as leader, guitarist Ken Song reminds us why. In his hands, the memorable tune allows each note the opportunity to stroll effortlessly along familiar byways. He applies a tender touch and a fluid technique that grips this song and the rest of the program with an easy-to-love charm. Backed by one of our best veteran trios, the guitarist interprets his program of standards with a casual air.
Pianist Llew Matthews, who brings deeply felt passion to the program, enchants with treasured melodies such as "Vierd Blues" and "In a Mellow Tone." Bassist Luther Hughes, who supports with a firm and reliable rhythmic foundation, brings pieces such as "Honeysuckle rose" and "Look for the Silver Lining" a mellifluous fragrance. Drummer Paul Kreibich, who applies textural variety to the program, keeps spirits high with such chestnuts as "Recado Bossa Nova" and "Segment."
Song brings out the blues from every corner of the program. His "Goin' Wes," the album's closing number, employs the kind of harmonic layers that we recall from Wes Montgomery's classic recordings. Recommended, this tribute album serves two purposes: the obvious, to honor one who blazed the trail for jazz lovers the world over; and the not so obvious, to introduce an outstanding guitarist deserving wider recognition to the general public.
